Bridge Basic Rules

In most bridge clubs and clubs the rules of the official DBV are played, but especially for beginners can seem very complicated. We would therefore like to give you a brief introduction to the basic rules at this point:

Bridge is basically suitable for four people and is played with a French 52 card sheet. The value of the colours is subdivided as follows: Spades (♠), Hearts (♥), Diamonds (♦), Clubs (Cross) (♣)! The goal of the game is to make as many tricks as possible.

The team

The team is formed in 2 teams, whereby these teams are fixed (e.g. two married couples dueling each other) or are determined by drawing lots.

The division of the players themselves takes place according to points of the compass, so that the respective partners take place opposite each other. Thus a North-South-Pair and a East-West-Pair, are formed, which now play against each other. The game itself is divided into 2 phases: the Stimulation (Licit) and the playing of the cards. The dealer first shuffles the cards, takes one draw and deals the cards one at a time until each player holds 13 cards.

Sheet rating

Before irritating you, you need to be able to assess the strength of your sheet well. One aid is the so-called figure points.

Ass = 4 points

King = 3 points

Dame = 2 points

Bube = 1 point

The remaining cards are scored with 0 points

A hand with less than 10 points is considered weak. A hand of 12 points or more, on the other hand, is strong enough for a first stimulus. At 16-19 points you can speak of a strong hand, at 20 points a very strong one.

A further important factor is the distribution. The more cards you think of a color, the more useful it is to define it as a trump.

Stimulating

In this first phase you determine how many stitches each pair must make and whether there is a trump, or if so, which color is the trump. Starting with the dealer, each player now announces his bid clockwise for tricks and trump color.

The lowest bid is 1 hit (hit = cross). I.e. he commits himself with his partner to win 7 tricks (6+1) with hit as trump. If all four players should pass when stimulating, (no bid) the hand will be called fitted. The cards are thrown together, shuffled again and the next dealer deals the next hand.

The player who named the highest bid is now the sole player. He plays against his right and left neighbours and tries to get at least the number of tricks he has announced.
